Travel To Mombasa #mombasa #mombasacity #shorts #travel #travelwithglen

When it comes to magical destinations that promise both relaxation and adventure, Mombasa, Kenya, surely takes the spotlight. Nestled by the Indian Ocean, this city isn’t just a perfect blend of history and modernity, but also a gateway to some of Kenya’s most spectacular natural wonders. Join me as I share my journey through the vibrant rhythms and tranquil corners of Mombasa, offering a few tips along the way to make your trip as enjoyable as mine.

Arriving in Mombasa is like stepping into a postcard — the kind with warm golden beaches, gently swaying palm trees, and waters so blue they’ll make your heart skip a beat. But, Mombasa is more than just its good looks. It’s a city that tells stories through its architecture and culinary offerings, showcasing a rich history influenced by Arab, Portuguese, and British presence.

I started my adventure at Fort Jesus, a UNESCO World Heritage site standing proud since the 16th century. This fortress is a must-see for history buffs, with its blend of Portuguese, Arab, and Swahili architectural styles. Walking through its ancient corridors, I could almost hear the whispers of old maritime tales and echoes of traders who once traversed the Indian Ocean. If you’re visiting, I suggest spending a couple of hours here, soaking in the history and snapping a few pictures to remember the experience.

For a change of pace, I wandered over to the bustling streets of Old Town. This part of Mombasa is a veritable feast for the senses. Narrow streets are lined with beautiful old buildings, ornately carved wooden doors, and kiosks selling everything from spices to fragrant coffee. Don’t miss trying out a ‘swahili breakfast’ at one of the local cafés — it’s an indulgence of spiced tea, mandazi (a kind of Swahili doughnut), and sweet chapati that will start your day on a high note.

Mombasa’s cuisine is as diverse as its people. Whether it’s savoring freshly caught seafood at a beachside shack or enjoying the spicy, aromatic dishes at Forodhani Restaurant, Mombasa invites you to taste its multicultural heritage. A personal favorite was the biryani, a dish that’s been perfected here over centuries. Mildly spiced and infused with rich flavors, it was everything I’d hoped for and more.

Now, no trip to Mombasa is complete without spending some time on its idyllic beaches. Nyali Beach is perfect for soaking up the sun and catching the local surfers in action. For a quieter spot, Kikambala or Tiwi Beach offers a more secluded experience. Remember to bring your beach essentials: sunscreen, a stylish tote, and a good book. Trust me, there’s nothing quite like unwinding to the sounds of the ocean with a great read in hand.

For those seeking more than just a sun-soaked escape, Mombasa offers a spectrum of activities. Haller Park is a favorite for families, where you can feed giraffes and spot hippos and tortoises. It’s a wonderful educational visit that promotes sustainable interaction with wildlife. Another green haven is the Shimba Hills National Reserve, a short drive from the city—an excellent spot for hiking amidst lush, tropical landscapes with the chance of spotting the rare sable antelope.

If you’re like me and want to dive into local culture, time your visit around one of Mombasa’s lively festivals. The Lamu Cultural Festival, usually held in November, isn’t far away and is a celebration of traditional Swahili culture. Think traditional dhow races, henna paintings, and Swahili poetry competitions. It’s a cultural immersion you won’t want to miss.

Getting around Mombasa is quite straightforward, too. Tuktuks are the most convenient way for short distances, and they offer a fun way to experience the city. Ubers and taxis are also plentiful for those who prefer comfort over the open-air adventure of a tuktuk.

While exploring, I discovered that Mombasa is deeply committed to sustainable tourism, something that resonates with my travel ethos. From hotels practicing eco-friendly operations to local tours promoting conservation, Mombasa is consciously moving towards a greener tomorrow.

Before bidding farewell to this coastal haven, I picked up some souvenirs to remember my time here — handmade crafts and fabrics from Bombolulu Workshops, a fair-trade handicraft business supporting artisans with disabilities. Not only did it feel great to support a good cause, but these pieces also make for unique gifts and personal mementos.

As I left, the city’s mosaic of cultures, flavors, and breathtaking sights lingered in my heart. Mombasa is a destination that invites you to dive in, explore, and embrace. Whether you’re lounging by its serene beaches, tasting its vibrant dishes, or getting lost in its rich history, Mombasa promises a journey filled with remarkable experiences. Till next time, Mombasa. I’ll be back, and I hope you will too.
