The Birthday That Changed Everything

# The Birthday That Changed Everything

There are certain places you remember because they were beautiful. There are other places you remember because of the food, the scenery, or the activities. Then there are those rare places that become part of your personal story.

For me, Sunny’s Hostel & Bowls in Playa Hermosa, Costa Rica, became one of those places.

When I booked my stay, I wasn’t simply planning another vacation. I was in the middle of what I now call my Costa Rica scouting trips. I had reached a point in life where I wanted to explore new possibilities, new locations, and perhaps even a new chapter. Costa Rica had captured my attention, but I still didn’t know if it was a place where I could truly see myself spending significant time.

What made this trip different was the timing.

My birthday falls close to Christmas, which meant that this single trip would include my birthday, Christmas, and New Year’s. Instead of spending those holidays in familiar surroundings, I chose to spend them in Costa Rica while exploring the country and learning more about the communities, culture, and lifestyle.

Whenever you travel somewhere unfamiliar during the holidays, there’s always a little uncertainty. Will it feel lonely? Will it feel welcoming? Will it live up to your expectations?

Fortunately, Sunny’s turned out to be exactly the kind of place I hoped to find.

From the moment I arrived, I felt welcomed. The atmosphere was relaxed, the accommodations were comfortable, and there always seemed to be someone willing to answer questions or point me toward something worth exploring. As someone trying to understand what daily life in Costa Rica might actually look like, those conversations became incredibly valuable.

Sunny’s became more than just a place to sleep.

It became my base of operations.

During the day I explored beaches, neighborhoods, restaurants, and local communities. I spent time learning about the area, talking with residents, and trying to imagine what life might look like if Costa Rica became a larger part of my future. Each evening I returned to a place that felt comfortable, welcoming, and familiar.

The location itself was ideal. Playa Hermosa offered the quieter side of Costa Rica that I often enjoy, while Jacó was close enough to provide restaurants, shopping, nightlife, and activities whenever I wanted them. The beach was only a short walk away, making it easy to enjoy the ocean, watch surfers, or simply take a moment to appreciate where I was.

One of the things I appreciated most was the people. Hospitality can make or break a travel experience, and the hospitality extended to me during that trip is something I have never forgotten. Everyone I encountered was friendly, helpful, and genuinely interested in making sure visitors enjoyed their stay.

Looking back now, years later, I realize that this trip represented more than a vacation.

It represented possibility.

It was one of the first times I could genuinely picture spending extended periods of time in Costa Rica. The country felt less like a destination and more like a place where I could build memories, friendships, and experiences that extended far beyond a typical tourist visit.

Today, whenever I find myself back in the Jacó area, I still make an effort to stop by. Places that become part of your story deserve to be remembered, and Sunny’s is one of those places for me.

Travel has always been about more than checking destinations off a list. It’s about discovering places that change the way you see the world—and sometimes the way you see your future.

For me, Sunny’s Hostel & Bowls will always be connected to a birthday, a Christmas, a New Year’s celebration, and a journey that helped shape my relationship with Costa Rica.

Some places are simply accommodations.

Others become chapters in your story.

Sunny’s became part of mine.
