Papagayo Restaurants & Beach Clubs: My Guide to Dining by the Water

Sunset-lit seaside restaurant with an infinity pool, palm trees, and ocean view.

If you’re trying to figure out where to eat, drink, and catch sunset in Papagayo, this is the page I’d want in front of me. I live in Costa Rica, and I personally visit every business in the Verified Network, so when I say a place is worth your time, I mean it.

Papagayo is one of Guanacaste’s most polished dining zones, but it is not just one single strip. You’ve got luxury resort restaurants on Peninsula Papagayo, private beach-club style experiences, and easier public-facing options in nearby Playas del Coco, Playa Hermosa, and Playa Panama. If you are still mapping the area, start with my full Papagayo guide and the wider Guanacaste hub.

My short version: choose the area first, then choose the restaurant. In Papagayo, location matters almost as much as the menu.

My strongest Papagayo dining and beach club picks

Here are the spots I would put at the top of the list first, especially if you want a mix of scenery, convenience, and a solid chance of getting a memorable meal.

Andaz Peninsula Papagayo Resort, Costa Rica, by Hyatt
Best for: elevated resort dining, cocktails, and polished sunset views.
Atmosphere: stylish, modern, and ideal for a special night out.
Access: resort-based; reserve early and confirm guest or non-guest dining rules before you go.

Secrets Papagayo Costa Rica
Best for: adults-only, all-inclusive dining with easy beach-adjacent convenience.
Atmosphere: relaxed but upscale, especially good for couples.
Access: easiest for resort guests; outside visitors should always confirm dining policies in advance.

Occidental Papagayo – All Inclusive Adults Only
Best for: a quieter adults-only base with bay views and easy all-inclusive convenience.
Atmosphere: classic all-inclusive comfort with a laid-back Costa Rican backdrop.
Access: best if you’re staying on property, but it is still worth asking about restaurant availability for outside guests.

Planet Hollywood Costa Rica by Royalton, An Autograph Collection All-Inclusive Resort
Best for: a livelier, family-friendly all-inclusive stay with convenient dining on site.
Atmosphere: energetic and social rather than sleepy.
Access: resort dining is easiest for guests; great when you want everything in one place.

Hotel Bosque del Mar
Best for: beachfront dinners in Playa Hermosa with a more intimate feel.
Atmosphere: romantic, relaxed, and one of my favorite styles for couples.
Access: easy to reach from Playa Hermosa; call ahead for sunset seating.

Café de Playa beach front restaurant and suites
Best for: beachfront dining with sand-and-surf energy and a front-row sunset view.
Atmosphere: casual to upscale, depending on whether you are there for lunch, drinks, or dinner.
Access: one of the easiest oceanfront options to work into a Playa Hermosa day.

Hotel Restaurant Villa del Sueño
Best for: a dependable Playa Hermosa stop when you want good food without resort formality.
Atmosphere: low-key, comfortable, and traveler-friendly.
Access: convenient for visitors staying in Hermosa or passing through on the way to Coco.

If your main goal is loungers, cocktails, and a full beach-club day, save my Papagayo Beach Clubs page too. That is where you will find the best fit for poolside time, daybeds, and sunset drinks.

How Papagayo dining actually works

The best way to understand Papagayo is to think of it as three different dining experiences layered together. First, there are the resort restaurants on Peninsula Papagayo, which lean upscale and often come with the strongest bay views. Second, there are private beach clubs, where the vibe is more about cocktails, music, loungers, and a minimum spend or guest policy. Third, there are the public-facing restaurants in Playas del Coco, Playa Hermosa, and Playa Panama, where things are usually easier, more casual, and a bit friendlier on the budget.

  • Resort dining: best views, polished service, higher prices, and more reservation pressure.
  • Beach clubs: pool or oceanfront lounging, drink service, and policies that can range from public access to guest-only.
  • Local beachfront restaurants: easier access, more flexible menus, and a better fit for spontaneous dinners.

If you are in Papagayo for a short trip, that mix is actually a gift. You can do one very special dinner on the peninsula, one easy beachfront lunch in Hermosa, and one casual night in Coco without ever feeling like you are repeating the same experience.

Where to eat by area: Peninsula Papagayo, Playa Panama, Playa Hermosa, and Playas del Coco

Peninsula Papagayo

This is the highest-end restaurant concentration near Papagayo. If you are staying at Andaz Peninsula Papagayo Resort, Costa Rica, by Hyatt, Secrets Papagayo Costa Rica, or Occidental Papagayo – All Inclusive Adults Only, the easiest move is to keep dinner close and book sunset. The peninsula roads are smooth, but this is still a tucked-away zone, and that is part of the appeal.

Best for: anniversaries, honeymoon dinners, and beach-club days where the restaurant is part of the experience.

Playa Panama

Playa Panama sits in a sweet spot between the resort zone and the more local beach areas. If you want a simpler drive and less parking stress than some of the peninsula properties, this is often the easiest place to plan a meal. The atmosphere here is usually calmer than Coco, but not as formal as the luxury resort core.

Best for: travelers who want easy access, solid views, and a quieter dinner plan without the full resort feel.

Playa Hermosa

Playa Hermosa is where I send people when they want a scenic beachfront meal without the stiffness of a big resort. Hotel Bosque del Mar, Café de Playa beach front restaurant and suites, and Hotel Restaurant Villa del Sueño are all strong options if you want to move from beach to table without much hassle.

This is one of the best sunset zones in the whole area. I especially like Hermosa for couples and families who want a beautiful setting but do not want to plan their evening around a resort shuttle or a strict dress code.

Best for: couples, families, and travelers who like their dinner with sea views and a relaxed vibe.

Playas del Coco

Playas del Coco is the most casual and the most varied. It is not as polished as Peninsula Papagayo, but it gives you the widest mix of local seafood, simple soda-style meals, bars, and late-night energy. If you want to feel a little more local and a little less resort-driven, Coco is usually the right answer.

Best for: travelers who want value, flexibility, and a broader nightlife scene after dinner.

Hotels and resorts worth booking for the food scene

Sometimes the best restaurant strategy in Papagayo is choosing the right hotel first. If food, views, and convenience matter to you, start with my Papagayo Hotels & Accommodations page and compare properties based on how easy it is to dine, drink, and reach the beach.

When I plan a food-forward stay in this part of Costa Rica, I usually tell people to book the hotel that best matches their dining style, not just their room budget. A great breakfast and easy sunset access can change the whole rhythm of a trip.

Getting there: transfers, shuttles, rental cars, ride services, and parking

Most Papagayo dining areas are about 25 to 45 minutes from Liberia Airport, depending on the exact location and traffic. That makes this one of the easier food destinations in Guanacaste to reach, especially if you are coming in for a short trip or a long weekend.

For airport transfers, I usually recommend pre-booking if you have a dinner reservation the same day you land. A private transfer or hotel-arranged shuttle is the least stressful option, especially if you are arriving with luggage, kids, or a plan to have drinks at dinner. Rental cars are the most flexible choice if you want to move between Peninsula Papagayo, Hermosa, Panama, and Coco over several days.

Ride services can be hit or miss in this zone, so I would not rely on them for a late return from a resort dinner. If you are planning a sunset meal at a more remote property, make the return plan before you sit down. Parking is usually simplest at major resorts and beachfront restaurants, but it can get tighter during high season, so I always ask about the lot or valet setup before I leave my hotel.

My rule: if you plan to drink, do not wing the ride home. Papagayo is too spread out for that to feel comfortable at night.

Practical advice for reservations, sunset timing, and access

There are a few things I always tell travelers before they head out for a Papagayo dinner or beach-club day.

  • Book early in high season. For sunset dining, resort restaurants, and beach clubs, I strongly recommend reservations. In peak season, the best tables go fast.
  • Arrive before sunset. If the view matters, plan to be seated 30 to 45 minutes before the sun drops. The light changes quickly here, and that early window is usually the magic one.
  • Confirm access rules. Some beach clubs are open to the public with a reservation or minimum spend. Others are limited to hotel guests. Do not assume access is automatic.
  • Expect resort pricing. In the peninsula resorts, entrées are often in the roughly $20 to $45 range, with cocktails commonly around $12 to $18. In Coco or Hermosa, you can usually find more affordable plates.
  • Ask about dress code and closing time. Resort venues can be relaxed, but some still want resort casual. If you are planning a long sunset dinner, make sure the kitchen is open long enough for your pace.
  • Plan for minimum spends. Beach clubs often use daybed, cabana, or reservation minimums, especially on weekends and holidays.

My golden rule in Papagayo: if a place is famous for the view, make the reservation for the view, not just for dinner.

That one simple move saves a lot of disappointment.

Frequently asked questions

Are Papagayo beach clubs open to non-hotel guests?

Some are, and some are not. In Papagayo, you will find public-facing beach clubs that welcome outside guests with a reservation or minimum spend, and you will also find resort-only spaces that are limited to people staying on property. I always tell travelers to confirm access rules before heading over.

Do I need reservations for Papagayo restaurants?

Yes, especially for sunset dining, resort restaurants, and upscale beach clubs. In high season, reservations are strongly recommended. Even in green season, the best tables and lounge areas can go early if the weather is good.

What area has the best restaurant concentration near Papagayo?

Peninsula Papagayo has the highest-end resort dining and the most polished atmosphere. If you want more casual or local options nearby, Playas del Coco and Playa Hermosa usually give you more variety and easier access.

How far is Papagayo dining from Liberia Airport?

Most Papagayo dining areas are about 25 to 45 minutes from Liberia Airport, depending on the exact restaurant and traffic. That is one reason this area is so easy to work into a first-night dinner or a last-day meal before your flight.
